Sinhaeng Lee
Sinhaeng Lee is a conductor, educator, singer, and keyboardist whose work is grounded in the belief that choral music can serve as both an artistic and intellectual meeting place. He is the founder and artistic director of , a professional ensemble based in Seoul, South Korea.
Lee has led a wide range of ensembles, from youth and community choruses to university and professional choirs. His conducting experience includes university, church, conservatory, and festival settings, reflecting an unusually broad musical profile. Over the course of his career, he has served as director of music in a church setting, music director of a community chorus, and conductor of major university choral ensembles. His performance activity also includes concerts in South Korea through Vox Amicis, where he has programmed repertoire ranging from Renaissance polyphony to contemporary choral works.
Alongside his conducting, Lee is an active bass-baritone and keyboardist. As a singer, he has performed with distinguished ensembles and festivals, including the Philadelphia Symphonic Choir of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Spoleto Festival USA, the Princeton Festival, Westminster Choir, and Westminster Kantorei. His vocal and keyboard background has shaped his identity as a conductor with a strong sensitivity to text, vocal production, rehearsal communication, and collaborative artistry. He has also served as a church musician and accompanist, including work as Director of Music at First Presbyterian Church of Urbana, where he conducted the choir and played organ, harpsichord, and piano.
A central dimension of Lee鈥檚 artistic and scholarly work is his advocacy for Korean choral music. He has become increasingly recognized for his presentations on Korean choral diction, pronunciation, and repertory, helping conductors and singers approach Korean texts with greater clarity, confidence, and stylistic understanding. His invited lectures and presentations have addressed topics such as Korean choral pronunciation, Korean choral music, Arirang performance practice, and the folk value of Korean choral repertoire. He has presented for universities, conferences, and professional organizations across the United States, including the Eastern ACDA Regional Conference and the NY ACDA Summer Conference, and his work has contributed to a growing conversation about accessibility, inclusivity, and global repertoire in choral music.
Lee has toured extensively, performing in Spain, Germany, Austria, Italy, and other countries. He has participated in masterclasses with renowned conductors such as , (Universit盲t f眉r Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien, Austria), and (Volksoper Wien, Vienna, Austria).
Lee holds a Bachelor of Music in Church Music (Choral Conducting) from Yonsei University, where he studied with ; a Master of Music in Choral Conducting from Westminster Choir College under the mentorship of and ; and a Doctor of Musical Arts in Choral Music, with a cognate in Performance Practice, from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he studied with and .
